Letters of reference should include assessment of the applicant's background, abilities in research, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
Required Qualifications:
DVM or equivalent from an accredited institution, board certification from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), and licensure to practice in at least one state. Ten years of relevant experience in laboratory animal science and medicine, preferably in an academic setting. The successful applicant must have experience with managing AAALAC accreditation.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience with AAALAC as a Council Member and ad hoc consultant. Research training and experience evidenced by research publications, having been a principal or co-principal investigator on grants, demonstrated successful mentorship of students, post-doc, residents and faculty, and possess postgraduate MS, MPH and/or PhD degrees.
Academic Appointment:
Candidates interested in an academic appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine must have research training and research experience evidenced by research publications, having been a principal or co-principal investigator on grants and demonstrated successful mentorship of students, post-docs, residents, and faculty. Qualified candidates may also receive appointment as tenured faculty based on qualifications.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assures that animal use conform to all applicable standards, regulations, and regulatory guidance
- Serves as a consultant and resource to investigators on all animal care and use related matters
- Has delegated authority for centralized animal care operations, i.e. Research Animal Resources (RAR), whose director will report to the institutional veterinarian for regulatory and compliance oversight.
- Serves as full voting member of the IACUC, providing veterinary and regulatory leadership.
- May serve on other institutional committees (eg. Institutional Biosafety Committee, Occupational Health and Safety, Research Compliance, etc.) where appropriate
- Assists the IACUC with investigations and action plans resulting from incidents of deviation from guidelines
- Has overall responsibility for emergency animal health matters affecting UMN animals
- Has authority to suspend animal use and, if necessary, quarantine animals, when deemed in the best interest of the animal(s) and University
- Depending on interests and qualifications, may also take part in a focused area of scholarly activity including maintaining of active research program and/or participating in didactic and seminar teaching and/or providing supervision of, or mentoring to, laboratory animal medicine residents
- Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Research
