Abstract
As a reader of Lab Animal, you probably don't need to be convinced that animal experimentation is crucial to scientific advancement. The general public, however, often perceives animal research in a negative light, largely because of animal rights activists who use heartbreaking images and misinformation as propaganda. As a result, legislation and public funding are diverted away from biomedical research, potentially jeopardizing scientific progress. To combat this phenomenon, numerous organizations have been established with the goal of educating the public, the media and policy makers about the importance of animal experimentation. These groups also work to give laboratory researchers the tools they need to protect their institutions against radical activism. We present a small sample of the many US and UK organizations that are dedicated to public outreach and advocacy, highlighting the original initiatives that they undertake to raise awareness of the contributions of animal research. Remember that they can't do it alone. Volunteer to talk about research in schools or in your community, organize a raffle and donate the proceeds to further the cause, write an article about the issues that concern you—the possibilities are endless. Contact these organizations or visit their websites for more information on how you can get involved.
